The reigning French Champions Paris Saint Germain are set to make the trip to Villa Park to take on an Aston Villa outfit led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery in the Second Leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals in B6. Emery will be coming up against his former club who are now led by fellow Spaniard Luis Enrique.
It has been more than 40 years since Aston Villa were last in the Quarter Finals of this competition, with them last getting to this stage all the way back in 1983 when they were defeated by the mighty Juventus over the two legs on that occasion.
This tie between Aston Villa and PSG will be taking place in the Second City on Tuesday 15th April 2025, with kick-off coming at 8pm that evening. This game will follow a game at the famous Parc des Princes in Paris in the first leg a week earlier. The Villans will be looking to cause an upset by beating their Ligue 1 opponents on aggregate.
Villa’s journey to the Quarter Finals in this season’s competition began of course in the League Phase, where after an intense schedule that saw them play eight matches, Unai Emery’s side secured an 8th place finish after accumulating no less than 16 points in total.
During the League Phase itself, Emery’s side managed to secure victories against the likes of Switzerland’s BSC Young Boys (3 – 0), German Giants Bayern Munich (1 – 0), Italy’s Bologna (2 – 0), Germany’s RB Leipzig (3 – 2), and current Scottish Champions Celtic (4 – 2).
Club Brugge had been one of Aston Villa’s opponents in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League’s League Phase, but they did manage to get the better of the Villa on this occasion. The reigning Belgian Champions were then drawn against Villa as their opponents over two legs in what was to be their Round of 16 tie.
The first leg took place at Brugge’s Jan Breydelstadion in Belgium back on 4th March 2025, in what was to be a comfortable and deserved 3 – 1 victory for the visiting Villans. Leon Bailey opened the scoring for the visitors (3’), before left back Maxim De Cuyper scored what was the equalising goal less than ten minutes later (12’). An own goal late on in this game from Belgian defender Brandon Mechele gave Villa the lead late on, before a successful penalty kick from the spot from 2025 January loan signing Marco Asensio sealed the victory by a margin of two goals.
Club Brugge then came to Villa Park for the Second and Final Leg of this Round of 16 tie back on Wednesday 12th March 2025. In the end, it was to be a very comfortable, commanding, and thoroughly deserved 3 – 0 victory at B6 to seal what was an equally emphatic 6 – 1 victory over their Belgian counterparts on aggregate.
In the Second Leg at Villa Park, Unai Emery’s Villa side took the lead on the night thanks to a goal from substitute Marco Asensio at the start of the second half (50’), which made their position even stronger, with Kyriani Sabbe being shown the red card for taking down Marcus Rashford early on in the first half to reduce Brugge to ten men.
Villa then doubled their advantage thanks to a first goal for the club from summer signing Ian Maatsen just less than ten minutes later to make it 2 – 0 on the night and 5 – 1 on aggregate. The tie was put to bed just a few minutes later when Asensio was at it again, scoring his second goal of the game to secure his brace with just less than half an hour of the game remaining (61’). This completed the scoring in this tie in what was a 3 – 0 win on the night and an emphatic 6 – 1 triumph on aggregate.
As for their Quarter Final opponants PSG, they finished outside of the top eight in 15th place after having earnt a grand total of 13 points from their 8 matches. This was following some significant victories against the likes of Spain’s Girona (1 – 0), Austria’s RB Salzburg (3 – 0), reigning English Premier League Champions Manchester City (4 – 2), and Germany’s Stuttgart (4 – 1).
Then in the Knockout Phase Play-Offs, PSG came up against fellow French outfit in the form of Brest over the two legs. The first was a very comfortable 3 – 0 victory away from home for PSG, who scored on that occasion thanks to some goals from Vitinha (21’ – Penalty) and Ousmane Dembele (45’, 66’) at the Stade de Roudourou.
Then, in the second leg, PSG made it 10 – 0 overall on aggregate by beating Brest 7 – 0 at the Parc des Princes in the heart of the French Capital of Paris back on 19th February 2025. These goals came this time courtesy of Bradley Barcola (20’), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (39’), Vitinha (59’) Desire Doue (64’), Nuno Mendes (69’), Goncalo Ramos (76’), and Senny Mayulu (86’).
Then in the Round of 16, they came toe to toe with Liverpool, led by their Dutch Head Coach Arne Slot in this two legged tie. The first leg took place in Paris at the Parc des Princes, which was won 1 – 0 by the visiting Reds thanks to a winning goal from Harvey Elliott late on in this game (87’). In the second leg, PSG won the game 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from the aforementioned Ousmane Dembele, who scored in the early stages to equalise at 1 – 1 on aggregate at Anfield in the Second Leg. PSG won 4 – 1 on penalties on Merseyside in order to set up this UEFA Champions League Quarter Final tie against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
This will be the first time that PSG have ever played against Aston Villa at Villa Park, which will be a tie that will be the 1982 winners come up against one of the favourites to win the whole tournament this season.
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated and high stakes 2024/25 UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg tie between Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint Germain at Villa Park than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package.
