Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to come face to face with top four rivals Spurs at Villa Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. Victory against Ange Postecoglou’s side would boost the Villans’ chances of beating their North London counterparts to UEFA Champions League Qualification and a spot in the top four for a second season in a row.

Following a heavy 3 – 0 defeat at the hands of Marco Silva’s Fulham at Craven Cottage in October 2022, then-Head Coach Steven Gerrard was promptly dismissed. Former Arsenal, PSG, Sevilla, and Villarreal boss Unai Emery was selected to be the Liverpool legend’s successor in B6, and in his first half season at the West Midlands club, the Spaniard managed to lead them to a 7thplace finish and qualification for the following season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.

The 2023/24 season was Emery’s first full campaign in charge of the Villans, and over the course of that campaign, victories against the likes of Arsenal (twice), Spurs, Manchester City, West Ham United, and Brighton helped them on their way to UEFA Champions League Qualification in 4thplace with 68 points – beating Spurs by the narrowest of margins – 2 points in all.

In the Europa Conference League, victories against experienced European outfits such as Legia Warsaw, AZ Alkmaar (Twice), Ajax, and Lille led to their first European Semi-Final tie against eventual winners Olympiacos, who successfully beat Villa over the two legs at the last four stage.

Moving on to Spurs, their current Head Coach Ange Postecoglou took over at the North London outfit on 6th June 2023, ahead of the start of last season (2023/24). In his first nine games, he got 23 points – this was the most earned by a new Premier League Manager in this period, beating the previous record of 22 that was set by Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea back in the 2009/10 season.

The first ever Greek born Premier League Manager also won the first two manager of the month awards in his first two months in charge – the first boss to ever do so. By the end of last season, Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side finished in 5th place with 66 points – 2 behind Villa. They did secure a return to European Football after one season away via the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League.

These two clubs have met competitively in all competitions a total of 174 times, and it is Tottenham who have the superior record of 78 victories compared to Villa’s total of 60 to date. There have also been 36 draws in all between these two teams so far.
