A Chelsea side who are led by their Italian Head Coach Enzo Maresca will be coming head to head with Jani Honkavaara’s Djurgarden in the Semi-Finals of the 2024/25 UEFA Conference League, with the second leg taking place at Stamford Bridge in what is going to be an 8pm kick-off on Thursday 8th May 2025 in West London.

As the favourites to win this season’s competition, and with their excellent form in Europe this season, the Blues will most certainly be optimistic about their chances of getting their hands on some European silverware this season. Victory against Djurgarden can seal their place in the much anticipated Final in late May 2025.

In the League Phase, Chelsea went invincible, with them going on to win all six of their games to earn what was a maximum of 18 points with an incredible goal difference of +21 to boot. The Blues got their victories against the likes of Gent (4 – 2), Panathinaikos (4 – 1), Noah (8 – 0), Heidenheim (2 – 0), Astana (3 – 1), and Shamrock Rovers (5 – 1). This saw them qualify for the Round of 16 immediately, where they came up against Danish Giants in the form of FC Copenhagen over two legs.

The first leg took place in Denmark, and it was to be a 2 – 1 victory for the Blues thanks to some crucial goals from the likes of Reece James (46’) and Enzo Fernández (65’). Brazil’s Gabriel Pereira scored the only goal for the Danish hosts on that night (79’). The second leg then took place at the iconic Stamford Bridge in West London, and this time it was a 1 – 0 win for the Blues thanks to a crucial strike from their English central midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall early in the second half (55’).

The Quarter Finals saw Chelsea come up against Polish outfit Legia Warsaw over two legs. The first leg in Poland was to be a comfortable 3 – 0 win in the end following some crucial goals from the likes of Tyrique George (49’) and Noni Madueke (57’, 74’), who scored a brace. The second leg saw Chelsea go through 4 – 2 on aggregate despite a 2 – 1 defeat in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, with Marc Cucurella scoring the only goal for the hosts on that night in the first half (33’).

As for Sweden’s Djurgarden, they got into the League Phase following a Second Qualifying Round victory against Luxembourg’s Progrès (3 – 1 on agg.), a Third Qualifying Round victory against Finland’s Ilves (4 – 2), and in the Play-Off Round against Slovenia’s Maribor, who they were able to beat 2 – 0 on aggregate over the two legs.

In the League Phase itself, they finished within the top eight in the League Phase to automatically secure their place in the Round of 16, earning 13 points from their 6 matches. Their 4 victories came up against the likes of Panathinaikos (2 – 1), The New Saints (1 – 0), Víkingur Reykjavik (2 – 1), and finally Legia Warsaw (3 – 1).

Then came the Round of 16, where Djurgarden, led by their Finnish Head Coach Jani Honkavaara, took on Cypriot Giants Pafos over two legs. After losing the first leg 1 – 0 in Cyprus, a 3 – 0 victory in the second leg in Sweden secured their place in the Quarter Finals with a 3 – 1 victory on aggregate in the end. In the second leg, it was Oskar Fallenius (35’), Daniel Stensson (69’), and Tokmac Nguen (86’) who all scored for the hosts in what was an emphatic and thoroughly deserved 3 – 0 victory to set up their Semi-Final tie against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.

This is the first time that these two clubs have ever met in a competitive fixture in all competitions.
