Everton, led by their Head Coach David Moyes, is set to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. A victory against the reigning Champions would not only be a statement result, but it would also significantly boost their chances of a mid-table finish.
Since leaving Anfield, the Toffees made Goodison Park their new home back in 1892. They have played there ever since, but the 2024/25 Premier League season will be the club’s last at this historic venue, with the club set to move into the 52,888-capacity Everton Stadium from the start of the 2025/26 season.
After 12 years away from the Toffees, David Moyes’ return to Everton for a second spell in charge of the Merseyside club was announced back on 11th January 2025, where he succeeded Sean Dyche at Goodison Park. The Scot will be looking to ensure that his second spell in charge of the club as successful as this first, which spanned almost a decade from 2002 until 2013, which was when he decided to call time on his first spell at Everton in favour of a move to replace the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
The Scot managed to lead Everton to UEFA Champions League qualification by the end of the 2004/05 season, whilst also securing their place in the UEFA Cup (now the UEFA Europa League) twice, finishing 6th in the 2006/07 season, before then going on to end up with a very positive 5th place in the following campaign (2007/08). In the former, Everton reached the last sixteen where they were defeated by Serie A club Fiorentina.
In between his two stints at Everton, the Scot managed the likes of Manchester United (2013 – 2014), Real Sociedad (2014 – 2015), Sunderland (2016 – 2017), and West Ham United (2017 – 2018 & 2019 – 2024).
David Moyes predecessor at Everton, Sean Dyche, took charge at Goodison Park back on 30th January 2023. Everton were able to successfully retain their long standing status as a Premier League club by the end of 2022/23, finishing 17th with 36 points – avoiding relegation by a very tight margin of just 2 points. By the end of the 2023/24 campaign, they stayed up more comfortably, despite all of the points deductions that they suffered over the course of last year.
Moving on to Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has been in charge of the club as the Cityzens’ Head Coach since he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini back in 2016. Since taking charge almost 10 years ago, the Spaniard has won the following with the club, as of the time of writing: 6 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23 & 2023/24), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 League Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 FA Community Shields (2018 & 2019), 1 UEFA Champions League (2022/23), 1 UEFA Super Cup (2023) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2023).
These two clubs have played each other in all competitions 197 times, and Manchester City has the superior record of 81 victories, compared with the Toffees’ total of 68. As of the time of writing, there have been 48 draws between these two teams so far.
Everton and Manchester City will go toe to toe at Goodison Park in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be enthralling and highly competitive, with an incredible atmosphere to boot.
