We are now heading towards the business end of the 2024/25 FA Cup, with the Fifth Round of this season’s competition seeing Unai Emery’s Aston Villa take on a Cardiff City outfit led by their Head Coach Omer Riza at Villa Park. This much-anticipated tie in B6 will be taking place in March 2025. The atmosphere promises to be spectacular, whilst the match is set to be enthralling.
In order to reach this stage of the competition, Villa has had to get the better of two fellow Premier League Clubs. Firstly, the West Midlands outfit went toe to toe with Graham Potter and his West Ham United side at Villa Park in the Third Round back in January. In the end, it was a narrow 2 – 1 victory for Villa, with the hosts scoring thanks to goals from Amadou Onana (71’) and Morgan Rogers (76’), whilst it was Lucas Paqueta who scored the only goal scorer for the Hammers that on that occasion (9’).
This win saw Emery and his team secure themselves a place in the Fourth Round, where they would be going toe to toe with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur at home. It was a game that was dominated by the hosts, who managed to convincingly beat Spurs 2 – 1 at Villa Park to secure passage to the fifth round for the first time in 10 years.
The goal scorers for Aston Villa against their North London counterparts were Jacob Ramsey (1’) and Morgan Rogers (64’), whilst there were also very promising debut appearances from January signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio. Spurs’ own winter signing, Mathys Tel, was their only goal scorer in this game that evening, finding the back of the host’s net early in second half stoppage time (90+1’).
Moving on to Cardiff City, Omer Riza’s Bluebirds team began their current FA Cup campaign in the Third Round against fellow Championship outfit Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. In this game in the Steel City, the Welsh club came out on top as 1 – 0 winners, thanks to a winning goal early on in the first half by their 20 year old Welsh forward Cian Ashford (20’).
Then, in the Fourth Round, another Championship club stood in their way in the form of Mark Robins’ Stoke City side at the Bet365 stadium back in February 2025. It was a thrilling game that ended 3 – 3 after extra time. The hosts scored twice through Liverpool loanee Lewis Koumas (42’, 46’), whilst the Potters were also able to score through a successful spot kick from midfielder Lewis Baker early on in the second half (57’).
Meanwhile, it was Rubin Colwill (8’, 68’) and Yousef Salech (19’) who were both able to score for the Welsh visitors on that occasion. In the end, the Bluebirds were able to win 4 – 2 on penalties to set up this fifth round FA Cup tie against Aston Villa at Villa Park in March 2025.
Aston Villa are seven-time winners of the highly prestigious and historic FA Cup as of the time of writing. They most recently won it in 1957, when they were able to emerge as deserved 2 – 1 winners against Manchester United at the Old Wembley Stadium, following a brace from Peter McParland in the second half (68’, 73’). It was Tommy Taylor who scored the only goal for the Red Devils that day (83’).
This success followed six previous FA Cup Final victories, which came in 1886/87 (2 – 0 vs. West Bromwich Albion), 1894/95 (1 – 0 vs. West Bromwich Albion), 1896/97 (3 – 2 vs. Everton), 1904/05 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 1912/13 (1 – 0 vs. Sunderland), and 1919/20 (1 – 0 vs. Huddersfield Town).
The Villans have also been runners-up on a total of  4 occasions, which were in 1891/92 (3 – 0 vs. West Bromwich Albion), 1923/24 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 1999/00 (1 – 0 vs. Chelsea), and 2014/15 (4 – 0 vs. Arsenal).
Moving on to Cardiff City, they are one-time FA Cup winners, most recently lifting this trophy all the way back in the 1926/27 season. In the 1927 FA Cup Final at the iconic Old Wembley Stadium, a sole goal from Hugh Ferguson in the latter part of the second half (74’) which secured the Welsh Club a 1 – 0 victory against Arsenal.
In their run to the 1927 FA Cup Final, Cardiff City did get the better of Aston Villa, beating them 2 – 1 on 8th January that year.
The Bluebirds have been runners-up in this competition twice, most recently in the 2007/08 season, when a goal from Nwankwo Kanu in the first half (37’) secured the win for that year’s FA Cup winners Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium. Their other final was back in the 1924/25 season when they were beaten 1 – 0 by Sheffield United, who won the game after Fred Tunstall scored a winning goal for the Blades in the first half (30’).
Overall, Aston Villa and Cardiff City have met just three times in the entire history of the FA Cup, and it is the Bluebirds with two wins compared with the Villans’ 1. They most recently met in this competition at the 4th Round stage at Villa Park back on 29th January 1949, where a 70,718-strong crowd witnessed a 2 – 1 victory for the Welsh outfit.
Villa did win 6 – 1 in their FA Cup meeting before that, back on 12th January 1929 at Villa Park, when Pongo Waring, Richard York, Joe Beresford (2), Arthur Dorrell, and Joe Tate were all the goal scorers for the West Midlands side.
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated 2024/25 FA Cup Fifth Round tie between Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and Omer Riza’s Cardiff City at Villa Park than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package.
