In January 2025, Stamford Bridge will be hosting an FA Cup Third Round tie between Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea and Derek Adams’ Morecambe in West London. The Blues will be taking on a club that currently finds themselves in League Two, the fourth tier of English Football.

Chelsea have a fine history in this competition with 8 wins in total, and a victory against The Shrimps would see the Blues take their place in the Fourth Round of this competition, which would take them a step closer to the highly prestigious Final at Wembley Stadium.

The Blues’ most recent triumph in the FA Cup took place back in the 2017/18 season when they were 1 – 0 winners against Manchester United thanks to a winning goal early on in the second half from Eden Hazard, who found the back of the United spot from the penalty spot (22’).

Their other seven final victories took place in 1969/70 (2 – 1 vs. Leeds United), 1996/97 (2 – 0 vs. Middlesbrough), 1999/00 (1 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), 2006/07 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United), 2008/09 (2 – 1 vs. Everton), 2009/10 (1 – 0 vs. Portsmouth), and in 2011/12 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United).

Moving on to Morecambe, they have never got their hands on the FA Cup so far in their 104 year history. The furthest that the Shrimps have ever made it into this competition is the Third Round, having done so this season, and on 6 other occasions, doing so in 1961/62 (Lost 1 – 0 to Weymouth FC), 2000/01 (Lost 3 – 0 to Ipswich Town), 2002/03 (Lost 4 – 0 to Ipswich Town), 2020/21 (Lost 4 – 0 to Chelsea), 2021/22 (Lost 3 – 1 to Tottenham) and in 2023/24, losing 2 – 0 to Championship Club Swansea City.

To reach this stage of this season’s competition, Morecambe were 2 – 0 winners in the First Round against Vanarama National League South (Tier 6) Club Worthing, before then going on to beat fellow League Two and former Premier League Club Bradford City 1 – 0 in the second round at home, getting the winning goal thanks to Jordan Slew late on into the game (81’).

Overall, Chelsea’s only previous FA Cup tie against Morecambe was that aforementioned tie in the 2020/21 season, when the Blues were 4 – 0 winners in that Third Round game at Stamford Bridge. The goal scorers that day for the home side were Mason Mount (18’), Timo Werner (44’), Callum Hudson-Odoi (49’), and Kai Havertz (85’).
