Manchester City Head Coach Pep Guardiola will be leading his City team into a crucial 2024/25 FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Championship Club Plymouth Argyle, who are led by their Head Coach Miron Muslić. This high stakes game will be taking place at the iconic Etihad Stadium in March 2025. Victory would strengthen their chances of winning this iconic trophy for the eighth time in their illustrious history.
To reach this stage of the competition, City has had to face clubs from multiple leagues in the Third and Fourth Rounds of this season’s FA Cup.  Starting with the third round, the Cityzens went face to face with League Two club Salford City at the Etihad Stadium. It was an emphatic, ruthless, and commanding 8 – 0 victory for City in January 2025, who were able to score their goals thanks to Jeremy Doku (8’, 69’ – Penalty), Divin Mubama (20’), Nico O’Reilly (43’), Jack Grealish (49’ – Penalty), and James McAtee (62’, 72’, 81’).
Then, in the Fourth Round, Pep Guardiola and his time took the trip to London to face League One club Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road. This turned out to be a sterner test for City, who did eventually go on to win 2 – 1 against their third tier opponents. The hosts took the lead through Spurs loanee Jamie Donley, who managed to score for the O’s in spectacular fashion when he was able to beat City ‘keeper Stefan Ortega from the halfway line, although it was perhaps unfairly ruled as an own goal later on (16’). Abdukodir Khusanov (56’) and Kevin De Bruyne (79’) were both goal scorers for City to give them the lead and the all important victory in the end.
As for Plymouth Argyle then came face to face with Premier League side Brentford away from home at the Gtech Community Stadium back in January 2025. It was a 1 – 0 victory for the Pilgrims, who got their winning goal through a strike from now former Argyle forward Morgan Whittaker (82’).
Then, in the Fourth Round, they faced the mighty Liverpool at Home Park. Following a spectacular and resilient performance, the South Coast hosts managed to beat the Premier League leading Reds 1 – 0 thanks to a historic winning goal from Ryan Hardie, who found the back of the Liverpool net from the penalty spot early on in the second half (53’).
Manchester City are seven time winners of the FA Cup, winning it most recently back in 2023 when they were able to beat their fierce cross-city rivals Manchester United 2 – 1 at Wembley Stadium, thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan (1’, 51’). Bruno Fernandes scored the only goal for the Red Devils from the penalty spot in the first half (33’).
Their other FA Cup Final wins came back in 1903/04 (1 – 0 vs. Bolton Wanderers), 1933/34 (2 – 1 vs. Portsmouth), 1955/56 (3 – 1 vs. Birmingham City), 1968/69 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), 2010/11 (1 – 0 vs. Stoke City), and 2018/19 (6 – 0 vs. Watford).
As for Plymouth Argyle, the Pilgrims have so far not won the FA Cup or reached a final as of yet in their history to date, as of the time of writing. The furthest stage of this competition that they have ever reached so far is the Semi-Finals, which they reached most recently in the 1983/84 season, when they were defeated by Watford.
Overall, Manchester City and Plymouth Argyle have only played each other once in the FA Cup. They met in the 5th Round of the competition in the 1987/88 season on 20th February 1988, where City were 3 – 1 winners thanks to goals from Ian Scott (7’), Paul Simpson (77’), and Paul Moulden (90’). Tommy Tynan was the only goal scorer for Plymouth in that game (78’).
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated 2024/25 FA Cup Fifth Round tie between Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Miron Muslić’s Plymouth Argyle at the Etihad Stadium than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package
