City have been no strangers to success in European Football. Their first European honour was the 1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup, where they were able to beat Polish outfit Gornik Zabrze 2 – 1 at the Praterstadion in Vienna, Austria on 29th April 1970. It was goals from Neil Young (12’) and Francis Lee, with the latter of which scoring from the penalty spot just before half time (43’). It was Stanislaw Oslizlo who would go on to score the only goal for the Polish outfit on that day (68’).
In 2023, the Cityzens became the Champions of Europe for the very first time when they were 1 – 0 winners against Italian Giants Inter Milan in Istanbul. Spanish international midfielder Rodri was the scorer of what was a spectacular winning goal, which came at the midway point of the game’s second half (68’).
As for Real Madrid, they are currently the most successful club in the entire history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, having won this highly prestigious club cup competition on no less than 15 occasions. Their most recent Final was in 2024, and they are now the holders, after having beaten German Giants Borussia Dortmund 2 – 0 in the Final in the iconic and historic Wembley Stadium in the heart of London back on 1st June 2024. It was Dani Carvajal (74’) and Vinicius Junior who were the goal scorers for Los Blancos that night (83’).
As for their other 14 wins in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League Final, they came in: 1956 (4 – 3 vs. Reims), 1957 (2 – 0 vs. Fiorentina), 1958 (3 – 2 vs. AC Milan AET), 1959 (2 – 0 vs. Reims), 1960 (7 – 3 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt), 1966 (2 – 1 vs. Partizan Belgrade), 1998 (1 – 0 vs. Juventus), 2000 (3 – 0 vs. Valencia), 2002 (2 – 1 vs. Bayer Leverkusen), 2014 (4 – 1 vs. Atletico Madrid AET), 2016 (1 – 1 AET, 5 – 3 on penalties vs. Atletico Madrid), 2017 (4 – 1 vs. Juventus), 2018 (3 – 1 vs. Liverpool), & 2022 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool).
In the League Phase, Manchester City finished in 22nd place, with 11 points having been earned from their 8 matches in total. During this stage of the competition, they managed to emerge with victories against the likes of Slovan Bratislava (4 – 0), Sparta Praha (5 – 0), and Club Brugge (3 – 1).
As for Los Blancos, Real Madrid came in 11th place in the end in what was the first ever League Phase in the entire history of the UEFA Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s side were victorious against the likes of Stuttgart (3 – 1), fellow 2024 Finalists Borussia Dortmund (5 – 2), Atalanta (2 – 3), RB Salzburg (5 – 1), and finally French Club Brest (0 – 3).
The last time that these two clubs met was when Manchester City and Real Madrid met in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League’s Quarter Finals in what was a 1 – 1 draw before eventually being knocked out by the eventual winners 3 – 4 on penalties. The sides scored through Kevin De Bruyne (76’) and Rodrygo (12’) respectively that night at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola and City will be looking for some revenge in what is their latest encounter.
Overall Manchester City and Real Madrid have gone head to head on a grand total of 12 times in total, all coming in the UEFA Champions League over the years. Both clubs have 4 wins against each other, whilst there have been 4 draws between these two teams as well to date.
