The Red Devils will have their sights set on a place in the much coveted Final in Bilbao, which will be hosted at the home of Athletic Club, the San Mamés Stadium in late May.
The second leg of this much anticipated 2024/25 Europa League tie will be taking place on Thursday 8th May 2025 in what is going to be an 8pm kick-off on that evening.
Manchester United and Athletic Club Bilbao have only met competitively on four occasions in all competitions, with their most recent encounter taking place in Bilbao, Spain at the world famous San Mames all the way back on 15th March 2012 in the Second Leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie, losing 2 – 1 in that game – United did score through a goal from Wayne Rooney (80’).
The last time that the Red Devils were victorious against Athletic Club, also known as Athletic Bilbao, was all the way back on 6th February 1957 in what was just their second competitive meeting. It was in the second leg of the European Cup Quarter Finals, which saw United win 3 – 0 at Maine Road through goals from Johnny Berry, Tommy Taylor, and Dennis Viollet.
In the current Europa League campaign, United began in the League Phase, and they went on to secure immediate qualification for the Round of 16 following what was a 3rd place finish, having won 5 of their 8 games, earning 18 points in total.
They were victorious against the likes of PAOK (2 – 0), Bodø/Glimt (3 – 2), Viktoria Plzeň (2 – 1), Rangers (2 – 1), and finally Steaua Bucharest, who they were able to beat comfortably 2 – 0 away from home in Romania thanks to goals coming from the likes of Diogo Dalot (60’) and Kobbie Mainoo (68’).
Then in the Round of 16, Amorim’s United side came up against Real Sociedad over two legs, with the first taking place away from home in Spain against the La Liga Giant. It was a 1 – 1 draw, with Mikel Oyarzabal (70’ – Penalty) and Joshua Zirkzee (57’) scoring for both clubs at the REALE Arena in San Sebastián.
It was an emphatic 4 – 1 win at Old Trafford in the Second Leg to confirm their place in the Quarter Finals, as well as a comfortable 5 – 2 victory on aggregate against Sociedad for United. The goals in a game that saw the Spanish visitors go down to ten men came through the likes of Bruno Fernandes (16’ – Penalty, 50’ – Penalty, 87’) and the aforementioned Diogo Dalot (90+1’), with the former scoring a crucial hat-trick.
Next up was French Giants Lyon in the Quarter Finals, with the first leg taking place in France. Despite goals from the likes of Leny Yoro (45+5’) and Joshua Zirkzee (88’), goals from Thiago Almada (26’) and Rayan Cherki (90+5’) for the French hosts saw this game end in a 2 – 2 draw, and with all to play for going into the second leg at Old Trafford.
The second leg was one of the most exciting games to have ever taken place at the Theatre Of Dreams, where United were able to go and to win 5 – 4 after extra time. The five goals for the home side came from Manuel Ugarte (10’), Diogo Dalot (45+1’), Bruno Fernandes (114’ – Penalty), Kobbie Mainoo (120’), with the winning goal coming courtesy of England international central defender Harry Maguire in stoppage time in extra time in what was an incredibly dramatic match in Manchester (120+1’). Corentin Tolisso (71’), Nicolas Tagliafico (78’), Rayan Cherki (105’), and former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette (110’ – Penalty) were all on the scoresheet themselves for Lyon that night.
This saw Manchester United secure their Semi Final place, where they will go toe to toe with Spain’s Athletic Club over two legs, bidding to get to that Final in Bilbao in late May 2025.
In the League Phase, Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club finished just a place and one point above United in 2nd place with a grand total of 19 points, with them winning as many as 6 of their 8 games. These victories came against the likes of AZ Alkmaar (2 – 0), Slavia Praha (1 – 0), Ludogorets (2 – 1), Elfsborg (3 – 0), Fenerbahçe (2 – 0), and Viktoria Plzeň (3 – 1).
Then came Roma of the Italian Serie A, losing the first leg 2 – 1 in Rome, before then winning the second leg 3 – 1 for a 4 – 3 aggregate victory in Bilbao, Spain. The goals for the Spanish hosts had come from the likes of Nico Williams (45+3’, 82’), and Yuri Berchiche (68’). Leandro Paredes scored the only goal for the Italian visitors on that occasion, scoring from the penalty spot in second half stoppage time (90+3’).
Then in the Quarter Finals, Athletic Club came up against Scottish Giants Rangers, with the first leg at Ibrox in Glasgow ending in a goalless draw. In the second leg in Bilbao, Athletic Club won 2 – 0 for an aggregate win thanks to some goals from the likes of Oihan Sancet (45+4’ – Penalty) and Nico Williams (80’). This booked them a place in the Europa League Semi-Finals.
There is no better way to watch this highly anticipated and high stakes 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Semi-Finals tie between Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United and Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club at Old Trafford with an Eventmasters Hospitality Package.
