Erik Ten Hag and his Manchester United side will face Eredivisie side FC Twente in the League Phase of the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are amongst the favourites to win this year’s competition, and victory against their Dutch counterparts will bring them a step closer to realising this ambition.

United are a club with an illustrious history, and are no strangers to success in European Football. They lifted their first and so far only UEFA Europa League title back in 2017 under the stewardship of then-Head Coach Jose Mourinho when they were 2 – 0 winners against another European heavyweight in the form of Ajax. Paul Pogba (18’) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (48’) were both on target for United that day.

The Red Devils have also won the UEFA Champions League three times (1967/68, 1998/99 & 2007/08), and the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1990/91) and UEFA Super Cup (1991) on one occasion each. In these Champions League Finals, they were victorious against Benfica (4 – 1), Bayern Munich (2 – 1), and Chelsea (6 – 5 on penalties).

For the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Super Cup Final Wins, the Red Devils emerged victorious against FC Barcelona (2 – 1) and Red Star Belgrade (1 – 0), respectively.

Moving on to their opponents FC Twente, while they haven’t won a European title to date, they have vast amounts of European experience, including the UEFA Europa League. The furthest they have ever reached in this competition was the Final in the 1974/75 season, where they lost 5 – 1 on aggregate against German Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

They also made the semi-finals a few seasons earlier in 1972/73, when they were also defeated by Borussia Monchengladbach, and by the same aggregate scoreline of 5 – 1.

More recently, Twente did make it as far as the Quarter Finals back in the 2010/11 season, when they were ultimately defeated 8 – 2 on aggregate over two legs by Spanish outfit Villarreal.

This will be the first time that Manchester United have met FC Twente in any competitive fixture, so history is sure to be made when the clubs from England and the Netherlands go toe to toe at the historic and iconic Old Trafford in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League’s League Phase.
