Cole Palmer signs new Chelsea contract

The England international has been a standout player for the Blues ever since he joined the West London Club from Manchester City.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have had a busy summer transfer window, with a plethora of players joining and leaving the club as their Italian Head Coach looks to put together his squad to realise their ambitions of a top four finish this season.

News broke on Tuesday of a player being retained – Blues fans across the world were delighted to learn that Cole Palmer had agreed to sign a two year contract extension at the club, which will now see him stay at Stamford Bridge until 2033. His contract was originally set to expire in 2031.

Last season, Palmer was Chelsea’s leading goal scorer with a total of 22 goals in 33 Premier League matches, which also saw him finish the campaign second in the goal scoring charts with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scoring more with 27 in all. Cole also scored more goals than the likes of Phil Foden (19), Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins (19), Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (18) and Spurs’ Son Heung-Min (17).

Not only was he ruthless in front of goal, Palmer was also amongst the most creative players in the entire division last term. His 11 assists saw him end up in second place on the assists chart with only Ollie Watkins ahead of him with 13. Palmer got more assists than the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Anthony Gordon – who got 10 each.

Upon signing his new contract with Chelsea, this is what Cole Palmer had to say (via Chelsea’s Official Website): “I’m buzzing about the new contract, as you can probably tell! The smile hasn’t left my face and I’m just really happy about it.

“Since the first day I walked in the building, I’ve felt really good here. I’ve felt settled and now to know I’m going to be at Chelsea for a long time means a lot to me.

“Everyone knows it was a big move for me when I came last summer. I’d been at one place all my life, but I wanted to have a new experience, I can look back at it now and know it was the right decision. I’m happy I made the move and I’m just loving life here at Chelsea.

“The season just gone, for me personally, was amazing. I felt trusted in the team and I really enjoyed playing. It makes me excited for the season ahead and I think collectively, we can do some really good things this year.”

Palmer has become well known for his calmness on the pitch when playing for Chelsea, and that has shown with the number of goals he has scored, as well as his assists. This has also helped him as the club’s main penalty taker, and over the course of last year, he scored the most penalties of anyone in the English top flight with 9 in total. Erling Haaland was just behind in 7, whilst Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka (6), Alexander Isak (5), Carlton Morris (5), and Mohamed Salah (5) were just behind the England international.

The attacking midfielder was also the subject of several iconic moments throughout the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. One of which was in that emphatic 6 – 0 win against Everton, which saw him find the net on no less than four occasions – the first to do so in a Premier League match since Frank Lampard all the way back in March 2010. Not only that, his first three goals came in just 29 minutes.

Also, who could forget that back to back hat tricks that he scored against Manchester United and Everton, making history as the first-ever Chelsea player to have done so in a single season. Palmer was also only the third player in the club’s history to reach the 20 goal landmark in their debut season – an extraordinary feat.

As a result of his stellar contributions last season, Cole Palmer was declared the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season, as well as being named as Chelsea’s Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season.

Fans will now be able to see Palmer play for their club for years to come and will have a keen eye on what he achieves with the team in the 2024/25 season as he looks to help lead the Blues to a top four finish and a return to the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League.
