More events coming to North London
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a world class venue, which of course hosts football, but it is set to almost double the number of events that are not football related.
North London is home to the 62,850 capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is home to not only football with Premier League heavyweights Spurs, it also plays host to a plethora of other events such as the NFL, Boxing, and music concerts, which only looks set to increase in the coming weeks and months.
It was announced on Friday that plans have been approved by the Haringey Council for the stadium to almost double the number of events outside of football that it can host on an annual basis. This figure currently stands at 16, but the council has approved Tottenham’s application to increase this, with the number of annual events now allowed at the state-of-the-art arena now standing at no less than 30 – almost double the previous amount.
The construction of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium began all the way back in 2016 before it eventually opened its doors three years later on 3rd April 2019.
The modern, world-class arena was the first stadium that was designed specifically to hold NFL Games in addition to it’s primary purpose of hosting Tottenham Hotspur matches. A game between the Chicago Bears and the Oakland Raiders was the first NFL Game to ever be hosted in North London on 6th October 2019, where a crowd of no less than 60,463 (a record) saw The Oakland Raiders win the game 24 – 21.
NFL Games have continued to be hosted there several times in subsequent years, with matches taking place there in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Further NFL contests will be taking place in North London from 6th October to 13th October 2024, with games between the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears taking place.
As for concerts, 7 of the world’s biggest music artists have performed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of their respective global tours. The first to do so was Guns N’ Roses, who performed here from 1st to 2nd July 2022 as part of their We’re F’N’ Back! Tour.
They were closely followed by Lady Gaga, who performed two dates in North London as part of her ‘The Chromatica Ball Tour’ from 29thto 30th July 2022.
2023 was a busy year for music concerts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Firstly, global superstar Beyoncé performed at this top class venue for 5 dates from the 29th to 30th May and on the 1st, 3rd and 4th June 2023 as part of her Renaissance World Tour.
Then came the Red Hot Chili Peppers as part of their Global Stadium Tour for one date back on 21st July 2023. Then came Wizkid to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as part of his More Love, Less Ego Tour for one memorable performance on 29th July 2023.
Pink, one of the world’s most influential and popular artists then performed at this venue from 15th to 16th June 2024 when her Pink Summer Carnival Tour came to North London.
Travis Scott, as of the time of writing, is the most recent music artist to have performed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 11th July during his immensely popular Circus Maximus Tour.
Further concerts at this stadium are bound to be announced as a result of this expansion in the number of non-football events allowed to take place in North London.
Boxing has also taken centre stage at this incredible arena in recent times, with the first bout to have taken place there having been between Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk in a fight that saw Usyk emerge victorious thanks to a unanimous decision in front of a 65,000-strong crowd.
Moving on to Rugby, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has hosted the highly prestigious EPCR Finals Weekend, which sees the European Rugby Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup Finals take place at the stadium.
The most recent Champions Cup Final saw France’s Toulouse get the better of Leinster in front of a crowd of 61,531, beating their Irish counterparts by a margin of 31 – 22 after extra time back in May 2024. A day later, a 34,761 strong crowd witnessed a 36 – 22 win for Sharks against English side Gloucester in North London in the latest Challenge Cup Final.
Not only that, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has also hosted ‘The Showdown’, an annual showpiece game that sees Saracens most commonly face rivals Harlequins. These two sides have faced each other in the Showdown a number of times, most recently on 23rd March 2024, when Saracens were able to come away as emphatic 52 – 7 victors.
This was the third time that ‘The Showdown’ had been hosted in North London. 2022 was the first time that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium had played host to this event, and that year Saracens were able to beat the Bristol Bears 27 – 23, before beating Harlequins 36 – 24 a year later in March 2023.
Other teams that Saracens have faced in ‘The Showdown’ over the years includes the Leicester Tigers (2013 – Wembley Stadium), Wasps (2011 – Wembley Stadium), Worcester Warriors (2010 – Wembley Stadium), and the Northampton Saints (2010 – Wembley Stadium).
Excitement is building, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium set to host more world-class sport and music over the next few months and years.
