Most expensive Premier League transfers so far

This 2024 Summer Transfer Window has been a busy one so far, and here we take a look at the ten most expensive Premier League transfers so far.

The ongoing 2024 Summer Transfer Window has been an active one for clubs across the country and the continent of Europe. There looks to be more to come in terms of transfer business for football clubs in the Premier League over the coming weeks as they look to give themselves the best chance possible to realise their ambitions for the 2024/25 season.

A handful of the moves to have already taken place as of the time of writing have commanded a significant transfer fee, and here we are going to take a look at the ten most expensive transfers to Premier League clubs as of the time of writing.

10 – David Raya (Brentford to Arsenal) – £27 million

The first entry onto this list is Spanish Goalkeeper David Raya, who has joined Arsenal permanently for a fee of £27 million, according to a report from Sky Sports.

Raya spent the entirety of last season (2023/24) on loan with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners from fellow London club Brentford, making 32 appearances in the Premier League alone, keeping a total of 16 clean sheets for an Arsenal side who challenged for the title last season. The Gunners ultimately missed out by just 2 points, finishing in second place.

9 – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City to Chelsea), Archie Gray (Leeds United to Spurs) & Yankuba Minteh (Newcastle United to Brighton) – £30 million

A grand total of three players occupy 9th on this list, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Archie Gray, and Yankuba Minteh all joining their respective new clubs for a transfer fee that amounts to a total of £30 million.

Starting with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, he is a brand new signing for Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea. The English midfielder was part of the Italian’s Leicester City squad for the duration of the 2023/24 EFL Championship season, being part of the Foxes squad to win the Second Tier title with a points total of 97. He got 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances in the league.

Moving on to Archie Gray, the 18 year old had a superb breakout season with EFL Championship club Leeds United, making 44 appearances for them, playing as a midfielder and as a right back, contributing 2 assists before joining Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs this summer. He was part of the side that made it to the 2023/24 EFL Championship Play-Off Final, only to lose narrowly 1 – 0 against Southampton at Wembley.

Finally, forward Yankuba Minteh has joined Brighton from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United for £30 million. This follows a superb season with Dutch Giants Feyenoord, where he scored 10 goals whilst getting a total of 6 assists in 27 appearances in total in the Eredivisie.

8 – Savinho (Troyes to Manchester City) – £30.8 million

Brazilian forward Savinho comes next, and he has just joined the reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City for a reported fee of £30.8 million from French club Troyes.

He did spend the entirety of last season (2023/24) on loan with La Liga outfit Girona, where he was able to score 9 goals whilst getting 10 assists to boot in the Spanish top flight last term. His efforts helped his side to reach the top four, securing qualification for this season’s UEFA Champions League thanks to achieving a 3rd place finish after accumulating a grand total of 81 points.

7 – Elliot Anderson (Newcastle United to Nottingham Forest) – £35 million

Next up on this list is central midfielder Elliot Anderson, who has very recently joined Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of £35 million from Newcastle United.

The 21 year old had spent the entirety of his career to date in the North East with the Magpies. He made 22 appearances when Newcastle qualified for the UEFA Champions League in the 2022/23 season, and last term (2023/24), he was able to make 21 appearances in the Premier League, scoring twice. He did also make 2 appearances in the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League last season.

6 – Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna to Manchester United) – £36.5 million

Joshua Zirkzee is next on this list, with the Dutch striker joining Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United for a reported transfer fee amounting to £36.5 million from Italian Serie A side Bologna this summer.

Zirkzee, formerly of German Giants Bayern Munich, got 12 goals and 6 assists in all competitions for Bologna last season, and he helped them to a 5th place finish with 68 points – securing their qualification for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League.

5 – Ian Maatsen (Chelsea to Aston Villa) – £37.5 million

Ian Maatsen comes next, with him having joined Unai Emery’s Aston Villa this summer for a transfer fee of £37.5 million from their West London counterparts Chelsea, who signed the left back aged 17 from Dutch Giants PSV Eindhoven in 2019.

Following loan spells with Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley, Maatsen spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan with German Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund. During his time with BVB, he scored 2 goals and got 2 league assists, whilst impressing for a side that reached the 2024 UEFA Champions League Final, where they lost 2 – 0 to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.

4 – Max Kilman (Wolves to West Ham United) – £40 million

Fourth place on this list belongs to central defender Max Kilman, who has just recently left Wolves for Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham United for a transfer fee of £40 million.

He played all 38 of Wolves’ Premier League matches, scoring 2 goals along the way to what was a 14th place finish with 46 points in total. Kilman has been impressive in recent years for the West Midlands side, and the Hammers decided to sign him this summer.

3 – Riccardo Calafiori (Bologna to Arsenal) – £42 million

We’ve now reached the top three, and third place is filled by Italian central defender Riccardo Calafiori, who has joined Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal from Italian Serie A club Bologna for a rumoured transfer fee of £42 million.

The 22 year old was impressive last season (2023/24), and also contributed 2 goals and 5 assists in 30 appearances in the Italian top flight. Calafiori, formerly of Basel and AS Roma, was part of a Bologna side that finished 5th in order to secure themselves a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League.

2 – Amadou Onana (Everton to Aston Villa) – £50 million

Next up is Belgian international midfielder Amadou Onana, who has just signed for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa from fellow Premier League club Everton for a huge fee, which is reported to be £50 million.

Onana joined Everton from French club LOSC Lille back in 2022, and last season he made 30 appearances, scoring 2 goals. The 2023/24 season was, of course, his last with the Toffees in what has been an impressive time on Merseyside for the young midfielder, who’ll be looking to develop further for Villa this year.

1 – Leny Yoro (LOSC Lille to Manchester United) – £52 million

We are now onto the tenth and final entry on this list. To date, the most expensive signing for any Premier League club in the 2024 Summer Transfer Window is that of French central defender Leny Yoro, who has joined Manchester United from LOSC Lille for a rumoured transfer fee of £52 million.

The 18-year-old impressed last season, and has attracted interest from the likes of the reigning European and Spanish Champions Real Madrid, before singing for Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils side. Last season, Yoro made 32 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring 2 goals, whilst also making 7 appearances in the most recent UEFA Conference League where he and his club were knocked out in the Quarter Finals.

These are the most expensive Premier League transfers as of the time of writing, and it would be no surprise if a plethora of expensive transfers take place over the coming weeks. The 2024 Summer Transfer Window is set to close on Friday 30th August at 11pm.

Excitement and anticipation are building ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, and it looks set to be an enthralling season with some captivating football and some shock results, as all of the clubs battle to achieve their respective targets.
