Pedro Neto joins Chelsea
The 24 year old Portuguese international forward has completed his transfer to Stamford Bridge after five years at Wolves.
Chelsea, led by their Italian Head Coach Enzo Maresca, have been amongst the most active clubs in the 2024 Summer Transfer Window to date. And, on Sunday 11th August, they unveiled the permanent signing of Portuguese international forward Pedro Neto from fellow Premier League club Wolves.
The fee to take Neto from Molineux to Stamford Bridge is reported to be £54 million (via London Evening Standard), and he has signed a seven year contract with the Blues that will keep him with the West London club until 2031.
Neto follows the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, Renato Veiga, Aaron Anselmino, Omari Kellyman, Filip Jorgensen, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall through the doors of the club’s Cobham Training Ground as they continue to improve their squad ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
On joining Chelsea, this is what Pedro Neto had this to say (via Chelsea’s Official Website): “It’s a big club, with big ambitions. I know the history the club has. I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates, meeting the staff, and meeting everyone else, because I want to make history with the club.
“It’s a young squad with really talented players. I played against Chelsea last year and I know the team we have. I can’t wait to meet them and work with them because we can do great things.
“I hope to bring work, I hope to bring faith to the team, to bring wins, to bring goals, to bring assists, and to bring everything to make everybody happy here.”
Injuries did occur last season for the forward, but he still made 20 appearances in the Premier League, scoring two goals whilst also getting 9 assists to boot for a Wolves side that finished in 14th place with 46 points overall.
Neto began his career with Braga in 2017, before joining Lazio in the same year on a two year loan. Once this temporary stint with the Serie A heavyweights was over, Wolverhampton Wanderers decided to sign him on 2nd August 2019 at the age of 19.
His first season at the club, 2019/20, saw him make 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring 5 goals whilst getting 5 assists to boot.
He followed this up with even better form in the 2020/21 season. In the Premier League alone, the Portugal international found the back of the net five times, which also included 6 assists to boot in 31 appearances in the English Top Flight.
An injury kept him out for much of the 2021/22 season, but he did still manage to score a goal and get an assist in the 13 appearances that he did manage to make that year.
Then fast forward to last season, where he scored the aforementioned 2 goals and 9 assists in his 20 Premier League appearances. Neto also has, as of the time of writing, 10 Senior Caps for the Portugal National Team, and has a goal to his name so far.
Over the course of his career so far, Pedro Neto has shown plenty of goal scoring and creative ability, and he should be a quality addition to the Chelsea squad. Additionally, should he stay as injury free as possible, he could become a talismanic figure for the Blues as they look to fight for a spot in the Premier League’s top four in the 2024/25 Premier League season in order to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League.
There is plenty of excitement and anticipation ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, and there is strong optimism that Chelsea can enjoy a very successful campaign in the English Top Flight with Enzo Maresca’s side targeting a return to the UEFA Champions League via a top four finish.
