Premier League: Eye catching Opening Weekend Matches
The 2024/25 Premier League season gets underway on Friday evening, and here we are going to take a look at some of the most eye catching matches from the opening weekend.
The 2024/25 Premier League season will be getting underway on Friday night, and it will be the first of a plethora of matches taking place throughout the opening weekend of the brand new top flight season.
All of the games will be crucial, as each of the twenty clubs will want to get their respective campaigns off to the best possible start with all three points.
Here, and in no particular order, we are going to take a look at some of the most eye-catching fixtures that are set to take place over the course of the opening weekend of the brand new Premier League season.
Chelsea vs. Manchester City (Sunday 18th August, Stamford Bridge) – 16:30 KO
This fixture is perhaps the most eye catching of the lot, with Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea taking on the reigning Premier League Champions in the form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea have ambitions of re-establishing themselves in the top four to secure themselves a return to the UEFA Champions League, whilst City will be looking to make more history with a fifth consecutive title this season.
These two heavyweights of English Football last went toe to toe in a league fixture at the Etihad back on 17th February 2024 in what was a 1 – 1 draw. Raheem Sterling gave the Blues the lead late on in the first half (42’) before the Cityzens found their equaliser late on thanks to their Spanish midfielder Rodri (83’).
West Ham United vs. Aston Villa (Saturday 17th August, London Stadium) – 17:30 KO
Next up is a contest between two teams who both hold ambitions of securing qualification for European Football in the league this year. These two sides are Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham and Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who are set to go head to head at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.
The last time that the Hammers met the Villans was also at the London Stadium back on 17th March 2024 in a 1 – 1 draw in the English Capital. The hosts took the lead with almost half an hour gone in the first half through Michail Antonio (29’) before Galatasaray loanee Nicolo Zaniolo found the back of the West Ham net to equalise for the visitors (79’).
Ipswich Town vs. Liverpool (Saturday 17th August, Portman Road) – 12:30 KO
This next match on this list is set to be an intriguing one, with newly promoted Ipswich Town, led by Head Coach Kieran McKenna, welcoming Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Saturday lunchtime at Portman Road.
The Tractor Boys are going to be making their top flight return after an absence that has lasted more than 20 years, and if they were to get a shock victory, it would help them in a campaign where they look to avoid relegation. As for the Reds, they will be looking to be in the race for the title.
It was all the way back on 11th May 2002 at Anfield, when these two clubs last met in a top flight league fixture, and it was an emphatic 5 – 0 victory for the Reds. Liverpool scored through John Arne Riise (13’, 35’), Michael Owen (46’), Vladimir Smicer (57’), and Nicolas Anelka (88’).
Arsenal vs. Wolves (Saturday 17th August, Emirates Stadium) – 15:00 KO
We now move on to Arsenal versus Wolves, with Mikel Arteta’s Gunners set to welcome Gary O’Neil’s side to the Emirates Stadium on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Arsenal will of course be hoping to go one step further this term to win the top flight title, whilst Wolves will be looking for a top half finish, whilst potentially challenging to secure European Football.
The last time that these two sides met in the league was back on 20th April 2024 at Molineux, where the visitors from North London were comfortable 2 – 0 winners following goals from Leandro Trossard (45’) and Martin Odegaard (90+5’).
Leicester City vs. Spurs (Monday 19th August, King Power Stadium) – 20:00 KO
The fifth and final game on this list will also be the final match of the first weekend of Premier League action in the 2024/25 season. Steve Cooper’s newly promoted Leicester City side are set to take on Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs team at the King Power Stadium at 8pm in the evening on Monday 19th August.
The Foxes will be looking to get their survival campaign off to the best start possible with all three points, whilst Spurs’ campaign to re-secure their place in the top four and the UEFA Champions League with victory at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester and Tottenham last met in a top flight league fixture two seasons ago, back on 11th February 2023, when Nampalys Mendy (23’), James Maddison (25’), Kelechi Iheanacho (45’), Harvey Barnes (81’), and Rodrigo Bentancur (14’) all scored for their respective sides in what was an emphatic 4 – 1 win for the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.
Spurs did win 6 – 2 the other time that the two teams faced each other in the 2022/23 season, with Harry Kane (8’), Eric Dier (22’), Rodrigo Bentancur (47’), and Son Heung-Min (73’, 84’, 86’) all scoring for the hosts on that occasion. Meanwhile, midfielders Youri Tielemans (6’ – Penalty), and James Maddison (41’) both scored the goals for the Foxes.
Excitement and anticipation is building ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with the drama set to begin on Friday night when Manchester United face Fulham at Old Trafford. It looks set to be an enthralling season with some captivating football and some shock results, as all of the clubs battle to achieve their respective targets.
