2025 BMW PGA Championship: Billy Horschel to defend title

Billy Horschel, the reigning Champion, is set to return to Wentworth to defend his title in a field that will also include 2014 winner Rory McIlroy.

All eyes will be on the historic Wentworth Golf Course in September 2025 when the latest edition of the highly prestigious BMW PGA Championship takes place in a field that will be full of some of golf’s biggest names. The enthralling action will be taking place over 6 days, from Tuesday 9th September to Sunday 14th September 2025.

Some significant news has revealed that 2024 Champion Billy Horschel is going to be taking part in the 2025 BMW PGA Championship, as the American looks to not only retain his title but to also seal his third career win in this historic competition at Wentworth. His win last year made him the first American to ever win this particular event on multiple occasions.

Horschel will be competing in a field full of golf stars, one of whom will be Rory McIlroy, who was the winner of the Championship back in 2014.

It was back in 2021 that Billy Horschel was able to secure his very first BMW PGA Championship. In that year’s event, his closest competition were Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, England’s Laurie Canter, and Wales’ Jamie Donaldson, who were all runners-up at Wentworth that year. It was a victory by a margin of just one stroke for Billy Horschel, who also finished the tournament at 19 under par.

In doing so, he also became the first golf player from the United States to lift this trophy since the iconic Arnold Palmer did so all the way back in 1975 at the Royal St. George’s back when this competition was known as the Penfold PGA Championship.

We now fast forward to the most recent edition of the BMW PGA Championship, which took place once more at the iconic Wentworth Golf Club back in 2024. The winner was of course Horschel, who took home his second win in this tournament, three years after his first.

The climax of last year’s action saw the winner decided via a tense and highly competitive play-off that involved Horschel, as well as South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence and the aforementioned Rory McIlroy.

Victory was officially sealed on the second play-off hole when Horschel managed to score a brilliant eagle to secure the title ahead of his nearest competitors.

If Billy Horschel does win the 2025 Championship, he will become one of very few golf players to have won it on three occasions, which includes the likes of Germany’s Bernhard Langer (1987, 1993, & 1995), as well as England’s Peter Alliss (1957, 1962, & 1965).

It is Sir Nick Faldo who has won the BMW PGA Championship the most times with four triumphs in his illustrious career. Faldo’s first triumph arrived in 1978 before consecutive wins back in 1980 and 1981. His fourth victory was in 1989 when he triumphed by the margin of 2 strokes ahead of Wales’ Ian Woosnam.
