King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes Preview
This is one of horse racing’s most prestigious races, and this year’s renewal at the 2024 King George Diamond Day is rapidly approaching.
The highly prestigious King George Diamond Day at the historic and iconic Ascot Racecourse is rapidly approaching. The action for this year’s event will take place on Saturday 27th July 2024, with the racing taking place from 13:15 to 17:25 in the afternoon.
There are a total of 8 races that take place throughout the Saturday, and they are as follows: The British EBF Crocker Bulteel ‘Confined’ Maiden Stakes (13:15), Sodexo Live! Princess Margaret Stakes (13:50), Longines Valiant Stakes (14:25), Moet & Chandon International Stakes (15:00), King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (15:40), Flexjet Pat Eddery Stakes (16:15), Betfred Handicap (16:50), and finally the Whispering Angel Handicap (17:25) to conclude the action for the day.
There is though one race in particular that stands out amongst the rest, and that is the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes. This race not only has the most prize money of any race of the day – £1.25 million – it is also the race on King George Diamond Day that has the most history and prestige.
This race first took place more than 70 years ago in 1951, with the inaugural race being won by Supreme Court who was ridden by Jockey Charlie Elliott. Talking of jockeys, two hold the record for the most wins of all time in this race with 7 each, and they are Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori.
Starting with Piggott, his wins came with Meadow Court (1965), Aunt Edith (1966), Park Top (1969), Nijinsky (1970), Dahlia (1974), The Minstrel (1977), and finally with Teenoso in 1984.
As for Dettori, his seven career victories in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes came with Lammtarra (1995), Swain (1998), Daylami (1999), Doyen (2004) and with Enable (2017, 2019 & 2020). These three wins for Enable makes her the most successful horse in the history of this race.
Finally, the legendary trainer Sir Michael Stoute currently holds the record for the most wins in this race with 6. His wins came with Shergar (1981), Opera House (1993), Golan (2002), Conduit (2009), Harbinger (2010), and finally Poet’s Ward in 2018.
The most recent running of this race back in 2023 was enthralling and intense, and it turned out to be a tight victory for Jim Crowley’s Hukum, who was victorious ahead of runner-up Westover by a margin of just a head.
There have also been a number of memorable races over the years. There was Enable’s 2019 victory against Crystal Ocean, and that famous length and a quarter victory for Monjeu over Fantastic Light almost 25 years ago, back in 2000. However, perhaps it was the 2010 edition of this race that is arguably the most memorable.
The main protagonists in the race that year were Harbinger and Cape Blanco, who filled the top two spots in the race back in 2010. The reason that year’s race was so memorable was that not only was a Timeform rating of 140 recorded, but Harbinger’s margin of victory across the line stood at a simply sensational 11 lengths. Harbinger was ridden by Olivier Peslier that day, with the aforementioned Sir Michael Stoute being the trainer.
Horses that look set to take part in the 2024 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes includes Sunway, Continuous, Rebel’s Romance, Bluestocking, and Aidan O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin.
Auguste Rodin is the horse that likely stands out amongst the field having been victorious at Royal Ascot earlier this year. It was the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday 19th June 2024 – day two of the most recent Royal Ascot. Auguste Rodin fended off stern competition from the likes of runner-up Zarakem and Horizon Dore, who came in third place. Auguste Rodin won the race by a margin of one and one quarter lengths.
The other horses in the field for this year’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes are as follows: Luxembourg, Dubai Honour, Middle Earth, Goliath, Point Lonsdale, and Hans Andersen.
Anticipation and excitement are growing ahead of King George Diamond Day and the 2024 renewal of the highly prestigious King George VI And Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes at the iconic and historic Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 27th July 2024.
