Royal Ascot: Sweet Rebecca debut?
A debut appearance at this year’s Royal Ascot is on the cards for Trainer Chad Brown and his horse Sweet Rebecca.
Royal Ascot is a horse racing event that never fails to draw in the crowds, and as one of the most reputable festivals on the racing calendar, all eyes will be on the events taking place at Ascot Racecourse over five days from Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd June 2024.
Throughout the rich history of this racing extravaganza, there have been several experienced and successful horses and trainers to have taken part over the years. For example, legendary Jockey Lester Piggott racked up no less than 116 victories at Royal Ascot over 41 years from 1952 to 1993.
Piggott, with eleven, has the most wins in the most prestigious race of this event – the Ascot Gold Cup. His wins came with Zarathustra (1957), Gladness (1958), Pandofell (1961), Twilight Alley (1963), Fighting Charlie (1965), Sagaro (1975, 1976 & 1977), Le Moss (1979) and Ardross (1981 & 1982).
As for horses, Yeats is the most successful Gold Cup runner with 4 wins, which came in consecutive years from 2006 to 2009. Aidan O’Brien is the trainer with the most wins in the Ascot Gold Cup with 8 in all, with his wins coming with Yeats (2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009), Fame and Glory (2011), Leading Light (2014), Order of St George (2016) and finally Kyprios (2022).
Now, it has been revealed recently that 3-year-old horse Sweet Rebecca, alongside her trainer Chad Brown, are looking for success in what looks set to be their debuts at Royal Ascot in late June 2024. More specifically, it looks like this much anticipated debut may well come in the latest renewal of the famous Coronation Stakes that take place on day four (Friday 21st June 2024) at 15:45pm in the afternoon.
Sweet Rebecca and Chad Brown will be looking to add their names to the illustrious list of winners in this iconic race from over the years. The likes of Watch Me (2019), Alpine Star (2020), Alcohol Free (2021), Inspiral (2022), and most recently Tahiyra (2023) have won this race in the last five years.
The current record in terms of wins for a trainer in this race to date is none other than John Porter, who recorded a total of 6 wins in the prestigious Coronation Stakes over the course of his career. Porter’s wins came with Lovely (1883), Sandiway (1884), Cereza (1891), Throstle (1894), Helm (1896) and Lowood (1898).
On the likely first start with Sweet Rebecca at the 2024 Royal Ascot, Chad Brown said (via Paulick Report): “It all worked out and I do think this filly might be my first Ascot starter. For right now, I’d say it’s likely her next start would be in the Coronation. She’s a serious filly and trains with a lot of power. She has a nice turn-of-foot, strong horse.”
Sweet Rebecca is a horse that has already experienced success in her short career to date, most recently in the 2024 Memories Of Silver Stakes on Sunday 28th April. It was a win for pre-race favourite Sweet Rebecca, who, with Jockey Tyler Gaffalione on board, went on to fend off some stern competition from the likes of Manuel Franco’s Faith Understood and Javier Castellano’s Curlin’s Girl.
Faith Understood and Curlin’s Girl had to settle for a second and third place finish respectively in the end.
There is set to be plenty of intrigue as to how well Sweet Rebecca and Chad Brown will do when they join the field to take part in this year’s Coronation Stakes at 15:45pm on the afternoon of Friday 21st June 2024.
With the 2024 renewal of the iconic and illustrious Royal Ascot underway in a matter of weeks at Ascot Racecourse, excitement, and anticipation are certainly on the rise amongst horse racing fans.
