Two rivals will be going head to head for bragging rights and glory when Ireland meet Scotland in the 2026 Guinness Six Nations Championship at the iconic Aviva Stadium, which is located in the heart of Dublin. This game is going to be taking place on Saturday 14th March 2026, with the much anticipated contest itself getting underway at 14:10pm that afternoon.
Victory in this fixture for Ireland would not only bring with it some bragging rights, it would also give their chances of winning and incredible seventh Six Nations crown a significant boost as they aim to bring themselves level with reigning Champions France when it comes to the number of times that a nation has won this particularly prestigious competition.
During the most recent Six Nations Championship in 2025, it was Simon Easterby who took interim charge of the team after their permanent Head Coach Andy Farrell took charge of the British & Irish Lions for the tour of Australia in that same year. Farrell will be taking charge of Ireland for their next Six Nations Championship Campaign in 2026.
In the 2025 edition of this competition, it was to be a creditable 3rd place finish for Ireland, with them having managed to accumulate a grand total of 19 points after 4 victories and just 1 defeat from their 5 matches in total. It was a campaign that saw them beating the likes of England (27 – 22), Scotland (18 – 32), Wales (18 – 27), and Italy (17 – 22). They only lost once, which was a game against France, who beat them 27 – 42 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin before then going on to win the whole Championship in the end.
Only England on 20 points and France with 21 points finished ahead of Ireland in the standings in the end.
Andy Farrell has been in charge of the Ireland team ever since his appointment was confirmed back in 2019, with him replacing the New Zealand born Joe Schmidt as Head Coach more than half a decade ago back in 2019. Since then Farrell’s Ireland have won no less than two Six Nations Championships, having done so back in 2023 and then again in 2024.
This also includes a Grand Slam in 2023, as well as two Triple Crowns, which were won back in 2022 and 2023.
That aforementioned 18 – 32 victory against Scotland was Ireland’s most recent victory and match against Scotland, with their most recent victory before that coming at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in the 2024 Six Nations Championship on 16th March 2024, where Ireland were 17 – 13 winners.
We are currently experiencing a great period of dominance for Ireland in this fixture, with the nation having on all of their last 11 encounters with Scotland. Scotland’s most recent victory in a competitive fixture against Ireland took place at the 2017 Six Nations Championship back on 4th February 2017, when they were able to emerge as 27 – 22 winners at the Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
For the very first competitive encounter between these two nations, they went face to face at the Ormeau Cricket Ground in Belfast during the 1876/77 Home Nations Rugby Union matches all the way back on 19th February 1877, which was won by Scotland.
Ireland’s first ever victory against Scotland came 4 years later in the 1880-81 Home Nations Rugby Union matches, again at the Ormeau Cricket Ground in Belfast back on 19th February 1881.
