The British Army and the Royal Navy will once again be going head to head at Twickenham Stadium in this historic fixture on Saturday 3rd May 2025.

This fixture has been played annually, with the exception of the pandemic and the two World Wars, since 1920 – more than 100 years ago. The Royal Navy were the first ever winners, beating the Army by a margin of 23 – 11.

Despite this being the inaugural fixture of the annual event that we know today, the history of inter-service rugby games go further back than 1920. The first ever Army v Navy game took place all the way back in 1878, but you would have to fast forward to 1907 for when the fixture became an annual event.

The 1907 game was won narrowly at the Queen’s Club by the British Army, who were able to beat the Royal Navy 15 – 14. The game was not played for four years between 1914 and 1918 due to World War One, but the event did resume once this conflict came to an end.

Now we move back to 1920, which was the first time that the game between them was played at the iconic Twickenham Stadium.

Then, just like it had done for the First World War, the Army v Navy fixture went on a hiatus between 1940 and 1945 as a result of the outbreak of World War Two. It was in 1946 that the annual fixture between these two armed forces re-commenced.

Sponsorship was introduced in the 1970s – the likes of USAA, Exchange, Palantir, Chevrolet and Duke Cannon were the sponsors in 2023. As for 2025, the game will be sponsored by Babcock.

Fast forward to 2003, and this saw women’s and veteran’s teams take part for the first time. In 2020, all inter-service matches were cancelled due to the pandemic. All fixtures, including Army v Navy, resumed two years later in 2022.

Overall, the British Army and the Royal Navy have played against each on a plethora of occasions since 1920, and it is the Army with a superior record of 66 wins in comparison to the Navy’s 30.

The most recent game between the British Army and the Royal Navy was won by a margin of 43 – 42 by the Army in what was an extraordinary match in front of a 46,092 strong crowd at Twickenham Stadium. The Army sealed their victory very late on into the contest, thanks to what was a pivotal try from Rfn (Rifleman) Vereimi Qorowale.
